The book

The book The "HOW TO START A SUCCESSFUL BUSINESS - SPECIAL EDITION FOR SERVICE LEAVERS AND VETERANS" book is distributed free-of-charge to service leavers and veterans thinking about starting up in business. The book provides initial engagement with THE HAMILTON PROJECT and a comprehensive starting point for anyone wanting to plan a successful business. There is no obligation to progress from this stage to start a business. Rather, the book is designed to help the reader understand what would be involved in starting a business and hence help the reader to decide whether enterprise would be a viable option.

About the book

In 2003, the BUSINESS SUPPORT programme was tested with 142 new business owners over one year. And we mean really tested: intensive research about the needs of business owners in the planning stage, at the business launch, as they got to grips with running their business and then as they planned for growth. And, from nearly 2,500 conversations, we found them answers to their questions as they arose.

That was back in 2003. Now we've taken everything that made a difference, combined it with the answers to questions that business owners asked and distilled it into this book. It's all taken a lot of work - which probably explains why we can't find anyone else who has done this. But it does mean that we can say, with confidence, that if you want to start a successful business then this book can really help.

Written by Professor Russell Smith, this book also includes CASE STUDIES of businesses featured in his page on small business matters for "The Independent". But despite its academic pedigree, don't expect this book to be boring... for example, where else will you find everything you need to know about business finance explained with a fried egg sandwich?
