The programme

Participants of THE HAMILTON PROJECT have access to the university-accredited business support programme comprising 64 modules with associated fact-sheets and templates downloadable from the Members' Area of this website. The language is straightforward, assumes no prior business knowledge and the modules summarise key business concepts in a structured way. The modules explain the process of enterprise - how to start and run a business - in a logical sequence and can be accessed at any time when starting and running a new business. But the programme doesn't stop there: free business mentoring is also available from the HAMILTON PROJECT team.

Based on research and findings from the original pilot project with the Royal Marines, this current programme has been revised to incorporate increased flexibility of delivery through the interactive information portal of this website. Included within the portal is an email-based 'mentoring' function whereby participants can ask questions that are routed to experienced business mentors, university Business School academics and a Faculty of Professional Advisers (including lawyers, accountants, HR consultants etc) for answers. And associated with this course is a University qualification 'Certificate in Small Business Management' that participants can achieve upon successful completion of the year-long programme.

As the programme progresses over one year, the participant is asked to develop three documents: (i) business plan and cash flow forecast, (ii) mid-year financial forecast after six months and (iii) a new business plan for growth in year two. Templates are provided for all of these documents.

Whilst this is sensible business practice, THE HAMILTON PROJECT takes these documents as "assignments" to the university such that participants can, for example, get tutor feedback on the business plan before asking the Bank Manager for an overdraft. Satisfactory submission of all three assignments can lead to the university qualification: the CERTIFICATE IN SMALL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT.
